How to Read a Job Description as a Fresher

30 Oct 2026

A job description is both an application guide and an interview preview. Read it carefully instead of copying every phrase into your resume.

Separate the sections

Check degree, graduation year, location and work authorisation first. Then separate required skills from preferred skills. Read responsibilities to understand the work and look for tools or outputs that your projects can demonstrate.

Tailor honestly

Move relevant skills and projects higher, use the employer’s wording when it accurately describes your work and remove unrelated detail. Do not add a skill because it appears once in the post. Note the likely interview topics and prepare them.

Common questions

Should I apply if I miss one required skill?

Use judgement. Apply when you meet the core eligibility and can reasonably learn the missing skill, but do not ignore mandatory requirements.

What does preferred qualification mean?

It is useful but often not mandatory. Focus first on eligibility and core responsibilities.
