How to Follow Up After a Job Application

30 Oct 2026

Follow up only when the job post or conversation makes it appropriate. A short message can confirm interest, but repeated messages will not improve an application.

What to include

State the role, application date, your name and a polite request for an update. If you completed an assessment or were given a timeline, mention it. Keep the same professional email and attach the resume only if requested.

Example

“Hello, I applied for the Software Trainee role on 10 October and wanted to check whether there is an update on the process. I remain interested and can provide any additional information required. Regards, Full Name.”

Record the follow-up in your private tracker and continue applying rather than waiting on one employer.

Common questions

When should I follow up?

Follow the timeline in the job post or recruiter message. If none is provided, wait a reasonable interval and send one brief message.

Should I call the recruiter?

Use the communication channel and instructions provided. Avoid repeated calls or contacting unrelated employees.
